Where on Tenerife is This? Photo Challenge #5

The last photo challenge was clearly far too easy, so this one might be a little more testing.

This Guanche warrior obviously isn’t too happy with the gods. He stands shaking his fists at the sky beside a road that links a number of hill towns. He’s a larger than life character and an impressive fellow in many ways (in the interests of decency we thought it was better to go with a rear view).

Although on a relatively quiet road, many people are attracted to this spot by some absolutely WOW views…but where on Tenerife is it?

Award yourself a bonus pat on the back if you know who he is and what he’s doing.

I’m with Gavin! And, according to this guidebook I have – something to do with Real Tenerife Island Drives – on page 11, it says that the statue is Mencey Bentor jumping to his death to avoid capture by the conquistadors.

The book also says that it is impossible to miss the El Lance mirador. This is not true. I drove right past the mirador last december without seeing that there was a great big statue there because the parking lot was full so I couldn’t pull in and I didn’t want to risk pulling across to the small lot on the other side of the road against the traffic on a blind corner. It was only afterwards that I learned what I had missed seeing.

LOL Joe – The guy’s naked and he still can’t keep cool. Mind you I don’t think I’d be parading ‘en pelotas’ in 40C, that’s just asking for trouble.

El Lance Mirador in Los Realejos it is. I thought this one might have proved a bit a bit trickier, so well done.

And spot on Martin, it’s Mencey Bentor a son of the great warrior Mencey Bencomo – damn that Island Drives for making it harder to find a picture that nobody knows :)

It’s said he was the last Guanche to die at the hands of the conquistadors. Not that he actually died at their hands. Like you say, he jumped from this spot, chosing the liberty awarded by death over enslavement. There was a lot of that going on in those days.

Anyway, It’ll be a much, much more difficult one next time :)
