This
month we focus on the coastal village of El Medano
Tenerife
is probably one of Europe's last paradise Isles, but living here
it's easy to forget that this island is fascinating and unique.
Not only does it offer lush forests, deserts, exotic fauna and
flora, mountains, volcanoes, snow, incredibly beautiful coastlines
and some spectacular beaches but you can also find some captivating
towns and villages, which we will be taking a look at over the
next issues.
El
Medano is an old fishing village on the southern side of the island
of Tenerife. Only about 15 minutes from the airport and approximately
20 minutes from Las Americas by car, El Medano is one of Tenerife's
best kept secrets. Although any windsurfer in the world would
know of it immediately as it is the venue of the world windsurfing
championships, many others know nothing about this jewel of a
town.
It
is the centre of Tenerife for all types of water and wind sports
as it has an almost constant wind, blowing in from the sea and
long stretches of wide sandy beaches, but El Medano definitely
has a lot more to offer the eager visitor.
The
whole place has a very relaxed, laid back and uncommercialised
atmosphere which makes a very pleasant change from some of the
other livelier resorts along the southern coast. It has a gorgeous,
small harbour and an attractive sea front. Along one of the largest
natural beaches in Tenerife is a long wooden board walk, meticulously
clean, overlooking dark golden sand and shallow water.
There
are plenty of windbreaks along the beach naturally formed by the
erosion of the sea into the light brown lava rock. It is all on
a very gentle slope and perfectly safe for children to playEl
Medano is also crammed full of a variety of cafes and restaurants
offering delicious meals, snacks and pastries whether you fancy
sitting on the sea front watching the windsurfing and kitesurfing
or you prefer to relax, tucked away in a quiet
corner enjoying pleasant conversation and chill out music.
The
bohemian type atmosphere is also reflected in numerous health
shops and yoga classes sharing the boardwalk with the surf shops
and café bars.
If
you are not the sporty type and your idea of a relaxing day is
lazing on the sand, football, cycling, tennis and dog walking
among others are strictly forbidden on the beach (though few pay
attention to it and fewer still enforce it) and the year round
breezy conditions should ensure you enjoy it to the full.
There
is very little "tourist" entertainment in El Medano
as most of the accommodation here is privately owned by local
Canarians, so if something a little
more relaxed and authentic is what you are after, this is definitely
the place to go.
Over
to coming months, we will be building up a picture of Tenerife
so why not visit other areas?
