Garachico is a lovely part of the island Carolyn. It is still quite an unspoiled area of Tenerife and is very much Canarian in character. If that's what you're looking for then that's exactly what you'll find. There are a handful of ex-pats of different nationalities around, but not enough to be considered a community.
Being able to speak some Spanish is pretty much essential. Isla Baja is a relatively underpopulated part of Tenerife and amenities tend to reflect this, so there isn't the same variety of shops nearby as in more populated areas in the north like the Orotava Valley. In fact I'd go as far as saying that's a bit of a minus point for anyone living there. There are supermarkets within a short drive and a bigger choice of shops in Icod de los Vinos.

The first tip in the article is an excellent one - try spending time there before buying even if it's only for a couple of weeks. You probably know this already, but the difference between visiting a place and living in it is immense - apart from essential shopping, there's all sorts of points to consider from schooling (if appropriate) to where to get your hair cut to what is there to do at night.

If you're seeking an authentic and quiet Canarian town, then Garachico may just tick all the right boxes.
