"Old
favourites and "new" championships
In
this the fourth part of our look at golf on the island of Tenerife,
we stay in the south west, with an old favourite
and a new championship course.
The Los Palos Golf Centre is a nine hole course s
ituated
in the South, in the district of Arona. Just a few minutes from
the TF1 motorway at Guaza, it is easily accessible from Playa
de las Américas and Los Cristianos. As a par 27, it is
a short course, but dont be put off by this as there are
many challenges in its 914 metres. It is certainly not a pitch
and putt as it requires accurate approach play, five of its
holes being influenced by water hazards.
Designed by José María Olazábal´s
company, it was opened back in December 1994. Situated amidst
banana plantations, it is perfect for a couple of hours practice,
or to become familiar with the game if you are just starting
out.
There is also a driving range, chipping and putting practice
areas, and golf classes for the individual and groups, as well
as club hire.
The terrace of the clubhouse overlooks the golf course, and
is fully equipped with bar, restaurant and golf shop. There
is also a children´s play area next to the terrace which
is ideal for families, and ample on-site parking away from the
main road.
Los Palos is the perfect place for busy people who just want
a quick round, or for those who are just starting out in the
game and want a relaxing atmosphere in which to practice.
Golf
Costa Adeje is situated 5 kilometres from the tourist centres
of Playa de las Américas and Los Cr
istianos,
and is fast becoming an important addition to the golfing world
here in the Canaries. In April, it played host to the Canarias
Spanish Open Championship, featuring Seve Ballesteros, Sergio
Garcia, José María Olazábal, amongst others
(although won by Englishman Kenneth Ferrie).
The 27 hole course was designed by Pepe Gancedo, who is renowned
for his hand crafted courses throughout the world. His philosophy
is to adapt to the existing terrain, whilst respecting the environment
and plant life in the area. The fairways follow the natural
contours, the dry stone walls delineating original agricultural
terraces have been restored, and the greens have been strategically
laid out along the course.
The
views are spectacular out to the Atlantic Ocean and the island
of La Gomera, as well as along the coast to Playa de las Américas
and the mountains behind.
The facilities are first class, with a beautifully laid out
club house, terrace, and private car park in the grounds. There
is even a lift to the adjacent driving range capable of taking
a golf buggy the 80 ft. or so to the lower level.
