Teatro Guimera

Some people have got a lot of face, well you might think that when you’re on the Santa Cruz tram. A few stops out of the main bus station, and you are confronted by this very theatrical looking mask. The plain looking angular building behind it gives few clues, but it is Teatro Guimera, scene of great plays and concerts since 1848.

The mask sculpture is called Por Adriano and was crafted by Igor Mitcaj in 1993, bet you can’t resist having your pic taken with it. The street, Calle Angel Guimera, is named after a famous local playwright, but the theatre is currently getting a welcome makeover, the first in 20 years. The bland outside hides an ornate 4 tier theatre designed by Antonio Pinter, it should look a treat when the doors burst open at the turn of this year.
