The
multitude of golfing facilities available on the island
(as detailed on the opposite page) are soon to be expanded
when the forthcoming Abama Golf Resort opens its fairways
and greens to the world.
Abama
Golf is to be part of a luxury complex in the south-west
of the island, consisting of a five-star Grand Hotel, Golf
Course, Spa, Conference Centre and Tennis Club.
The course itself will boast a Clubhouse, three-hole practice
course and Golfing Academy. The layout of the course will
include lakes, white-sand bunkers and over 90,000 palms
and other trees. Mixed with a variety of other plants, the
setting will be a true garden of tropical flora. A true
paradise for golf, the location ensures marvelous views
of the surroundings, with many of the holes having been
designed with a view of the Atlantic Ocean and the Island
of La Gomera. Abama Golf is an eighteen-hole par-72 competition
course with a further nine holes for a total of twenty-seven.

The course is designed by golfing legend Dave Thomas (San
Roque Golf Club, The
Belfry, etc.). Thomas learned his golf in the North-East
at Gosforth's Bridle Path course and was a leading county
player and Welsh international (although born in the NE,
his parents were Welsh). He turned pro early and went on
to have a successful career in which he came close to winning
the Open twice and won several British and European titles.
But he also decided early in his playing career that his
forte was course designing and he founded his course construction
company in 1958, building courses in Spain, Germany, Sweden,
Italy, France, Africa, the Far East and North and South
America over the years. At Abama, particular attention has
been paid to the academy which will be capable of recreating
real situations on the course. There will also be putting
and chipping areas, a bunker area, as well as three holes
to test the skill of golfers, all as part of the Abama Golf
Academy.
The
hotel, designed by famous architect Melvin Villaroel, will
surely be one of the most exclusive in the world. The Abama
complex will contain a handsome citadel of Arabic inspiration
in total harmony with a setting of subtropical vegetation.
The main building with 375 rooms and suites stands on the
edge of the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by a garden watered
by lakes and cascades, with a further 152 luxurious villas
constructed to the very highest level of comfort.
All tastes are to be catered for with themed restaurants
throughout the complex. Of these El Mirador
stands out, as it is sited on the edge of the cliff next
to the sea from where you will be able to gain direct access
down to the private beach below.
To
get there, take the TF - 1 motorway to the end, then take
the road to Playa de San Juan, travelling for approximately
9 kilometres until you come to the golf course.
